Development, from cornfield to cookie-cutter house

While Last Harvest paints an appealing picture of the future of housing development in America, it is perhaps not entirely honest. It is a book searching for a silver lining. Admittedly, it finds one, but that is not enough to lighten the storm cloud that is suburban development.

Inventing English

A reader who simply thinks it would be neat to know where a few words came from would probably not find this book very beneficial. But the kind of reader who would be fascinated to read rallying sermon written in 900 or so to urge the troops on to victory over invading foreigners will find Lerer’s work downright fascinating.
