I find myself sitting next to a young man in a blue suit in a bar at the tailwinds of a big party. He’s texting his girlfriend.

“We must’ve just missed each other,” he said.

“Don’t you live together?” I asked. “Didn’t you come in together?”

“We avoid each other,” he said.

Now these are two tall, elegant, smart and educated young people. I’ve watched them all night dancing, talking, splitting up at the party and then coming back together.

He’s done texting now.

“Living together, you know, is a big accomplishment. We try not to mess with it.”
